Jack Hughes Class

The Jack Hughes Sunday School class began as a “young marrieds” class some 30 years ago and is still attended by several original members.  It was named for a young man who was stricken with a fatal disease at an early age.  The class has occupied numerous classrooms during its lifetime.  Attendance each Sunday is between 30 and 35 except during summer months when it drops a bit.  A number of teachers conduct classes.  Doug Ragsdale is the lead teacher, supported by Bibb Underwood, Karen Roberts, Patsy Greiner, and occasionally Allyn Gill or Bill Barber.  Each teacher selects his/her topic and may or may not follow a structured program.  Generally, the emphasis is on Christianity in everyday life.  How it affects us; what it means to us; how we witness in our daily routine.  Teaching materials range from church approved lessons to current news magazines and newspapers.  Guest speakers are always welcome.  The class meets at 9:45 a.m. in room 130 in the Education Building.

UPPER ROOM

The Upper Room Sunday School class was once described as “a multigenerational, non-traditional, haven for drop-outs.”  In age we range from a quarter to a half century.  Our topics over the last couple of years have been varied.  Our study materials are an eclectic mix of books, Bible readings, current articles, and sometimes poetry.  We generally seek out our lessons from material that lends itself to discussion as we seek to grow in religious knowledge, spiritual well-being, and Christian fellowship.  We take turns at facilitating the lessons and our discussions are usually lively.  We revel in our informal motto “ We agree to disagree.”  For more information call Jenny or Frank Flauto at 396-2703.  The class meets in room 126 in the Education Building.

CRUSADERS

The Crusaders Sunday School class was first organized in 1956 and has moved around to many locations on the church property.  Members are in the 50 to 70 age range, mostly grandparents.  Some of our members have been around for years, literally, but we also have some relatively newcomers.  At times the class has used the FaithLink study, which is the lesson obtained from the internet on current topics relating to religious matters and a particular Bible verse.  A project we have participated in several years is the Caring for Children program with a $38 monthly contribution to an insurance program for a child.  This is for children who are not otherwise insured.  Another project we undertake is taking up an extra collection each Sunday which we call our “rice and beans” envelope.  We donate this money to the San Marcos Food Bank so they are able to  buy quantity size bags of rice and beans.  We also usually donate hams, turkeys, or money for those items at Thanksgiving and Christmas time.  We welcome all new members.  Come join us!  This class meets in room 125 in the Education Building.

LIVING VINE

The Living Vine Sunday School class is made up of young, career minded couples and singles that like to study the Bible in a non-traditional way.  We do not have a specific instructor, but rather we trade off responsibilities of facilitating the class. We often have guest teachers which include our associate pastor and christian education director.  This is a great class for  visitors and new members. We are a social oriented group that meets quarterly in various locations away from the Church building.  The class has studied various books including Max Lucado.  Please drop by Sunday morning for a cup of coffee or e-mail us at ebrown@redneck.net.  The class meets at 9:45 a.m. in room 201, upstairs in Todd Hall.

COLLEGE AND CAREER

The College and Career Class is a great class for college students and young professionals.  The class meets for socials, camping trips, and other fellowship opportunity.   This class enjoys open discussion.  The size of the class varies from 10 to 22 members on any given Sunday.  Meeting time begins at 10:00 a.m. in room 206, upstairs in Todd Hall.
